PleurX catheters provide a practical solution for patients who experience frequent fluid buildup in the pleural space of the chest or the peritoneal space of the abdomen due to conditions like recurrent pleural effusions or malignant ascites. Traditionally, these patients may need to visit a hospital or outpatient center repeatedly for procedures like thoracentesis or paracentesis to remove excess fluid, which can be both uncomfortable and time-consuming.

The PleurX catheter system is designed to make fluid management easier by allowing patients to drain the fluid at home whenever needed. The system consists of a tunneled catheter that is placed in the chest or abdomen during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. The catheter is connected to vacuum drainage bottles, enabling patients or caregivers to drain the fluid safely and effectively at home.
